The College of Foreign Languages (FLC) was among the first three colleges to be established at Zhejiang Normal University. First founded as the university’s English Department in 1960, the college later expanded and became the Foreign Language College in 1996. Today, the FLC is a fully-fledged member of the Global Alliance of Foreign Language Universities and is the Director Member of the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network. We offer a doctoral degree program, a postdoctoral program, a master’s program of Foreign Language and Literature, and two professional master’s programs of Subject Teaching (English) and Translation (MTI). Our college also offers four undergraduate programs, these include English, Japanese, French and Translation as well as the College English Department. At present, we have a total of 140 faculty and staff, and more than 1600 students covering undergraduates, postgraduates, PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows.

The FLC has been rated level B (ranking between 20% to 30% nationally) in the 5th-round disciplinary assessment launched by the Ministry of Education and selected as the provincial level Class-A top discipline. The English, Japanese and Translation programs have been selected as National first-class undergraduate programs and the entry scores of these majors have successively ranked first among the provincial universities of Zhejiang Province. We have 2 national first-class undergraduate courses and more than 40 provincial and ministerial courses. The college’s achievements for the RICH foreign language education practice and research have won the second-grade prize of National Teaching Achievements in 2022 and the top-grade provincial prize of Teaching Achievements in Zhejiang province in 2021.

We have had fruitful achievements in the nurturing of talent, with a pass rate of about 98% in the national teachers’ qualification examinations for university students. In recent years, the pass rate for the TEM-8 Test has been 50 percent higher than the average pass rate of normal colleges across China. Our students hold the First Prize successively for 10 sessions in the National Teaching Skills Competitions for Normal university Students (the only one in the country), they hold the First Prize successively for 6 sessions in the National Teaching Skills Competition for Subject Teaching (English), and hold the First Prize successively for 4 sessions in the National Teachers Union Style Exhibition. In addition, our students have won more than 400 provincial-level honors such as the Top Prize of the Guocai Cup in the National English Speech Contest launched by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) and the First Prize of HAN Suyin International Translation Contest.

The FLC has established partnerships with universities worldwide, including the University of California, Riverside and the University of California, Irvine in the United States, York University in Canada, Grenoble-Alpes University in France, and Kwansei Gakuin University, Utsunomiya University and Wakayama University in Japan and offers student exchange and joint programs respectively. The teachers in our college have actively undertaken a number of China-aid education programs sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Commerce, which have significantly promoted our competence in international social service.

Our college provides an excellent educational environment and advanced teaching facilities, this includes the 24,000 m² teaching buildings, the advanced language laboratories, the first-class translation laboratories, the simultaneous interpreting laboratories, the autonomous learning centers, the pre-service training centers for foreign language teachers, the eye tracker laboratories and the academic halls. All of these facilities serve to support the teachers and students in their learning, teaching and research activities.

The College of Foreign Languages, Zhejiang Normal University will undertake the fundamental task of virtue-promoting and talents-nurturing, observing the college motto of Moral Integrity and Academic Excellence.
